چکیده

This paper discusses the potential radiation hazard caused by beam losses in one of the transfer lines (TT2) of the CERN Proton Synchrotron, close to the point where the beam is split and can be directed towards the Super Proton Synchrotron via the TT10 tunnel, sent to the n_TOF experiment installed in the extension of TT2 (TT2A tunnel), or stopped in a massive dump. The TT2 area is separated from the downstream TT2A zone of n_TOF by a 4.8 m thick concrete wall. A full beam loss in TT2 could generate a serious radiation hazard on the TT2A side of the shielding wall. Several beam loss scenarios were investigated by Monte Carlo simulations performed with the FLUKA code. The various radiation components making up the dose equivalent rate in TT2A were assessed. It was found that the dose equivalent is dominated by either muons, mainly originating from pion decay, or neutrons produced in hadronic cascades inside the shielding wall, depending on the point where the beam is lost. A comparison between simulation results and measurements is made. CERN, Geneva, Switzerland 5 April 2002

Beam parameters in CERN’s Proton Synchrotron (PS) accelerator must be controlled (and measured) with tighter precision than ever before to meet the stringent requirements of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) programme. A non-destructive beam profile measurement system would be a valuable diagnostic tool. To this end, we measured N2 and Xe gas scintillation absolute cross-sections and lifetimes fo...

Development is necessary in a large number of technologies before a Neutrino Factory complex can be built. In the case of the CERN project [1, 2, 3], with the help of other laboratories, work is progressing on the systems incorporated in the reference scheme. The subjects under investigation, the status of the studies and the trends of evolution of the scheme are described. HEACC'2001, 26-30 Ma...

European Organization for Nuclear Research Cern - Ps Division Cern/ps 2000-026 (pp) Status of Studies for a Neutrino Factory at Cern

There is a strong interest from the physics community for high-quality, high-intensity neutrino beams as produced by a neutrino factory. With the help of other European laboratories, CERN has started a study on some of the many technological challenges of such a facility. Present ideas concerning the proton driver, as well as the muon accelerator complex, are presented and plans for the future ...

This note reports a number of different layouts for designing a high intensity proton driver. Such a machine should perform beam accumulation and bunch compression in order to achieve the performance needed for the production of neutrino in the context of a Neutrino Factory. The different approaches are described in details as well as the optics of the various lattices. Geneva, Switzerland 14 J...

In order to set up a powerful proton source for a future Neutrino Factory, increasing at the same time the flux of protons available for new and existing facilities, CERN is studying a 2.2 GeV superconducting Hlinac for 4 MW beam power, called SPL. The superconducting part of this linac covers the energy range from 120 MeV to 2.2 GeV. Three sections made of 352 MHz cavities with nominal ß of 0....
